Strike a pose, Vogue

We're all familiar with Vogue. The instantly recognisable title, the layouts, the reputation, the photographers. We all know what goes into the making of a magazine(or at least like to think we do after a viewing of The Devil Wears Prada). Many of us dream about The Book and the fashion closets.

But what about the people involved with the production?
Surely the cooler the magazine, the cooler the Editor? The editor says a lot about the magazine, and I'm not saying that old=uncool, but for UK and US Vogue, this just seems the case to me. Some people are beginning to doubt the "coolness" of Anna Wintour and the effect this is having on the magazine. I, for one am one of those people and feel a little traitorous that these days UK Vogue seems a little prone to make me YAAAAWN. Instead, I look to sexy and fun Paris Vogue for inspriation. What are your thoughts?

Either way, Lets take a look at some of the influential people behind one of the fashion world's most influential brands...

original, sexy, and ultimate french chic?young, blonde and cool?
UK Vogue: boring and unfashionable? (apart from Bay Garnett, of course!)
US Vogue: old fashioned and over obsessed with fur?

if I saw alexandra shullman on the street I wouldn't guess that she was editor in chief of british vogue, she seems a bit frumpy and plain.... but still, I like UK vogue better than US vogue.

p.s I'm canadian, I wasn't born there but my parents are both fully canadian, and I've lived in london most of my life but I still think of my self as canadian!

Yes, thats why I don't understand Alexandra Shulman at all, most people, even brits wouldn't recognise her, and shes rather uncool considering she's editor in chief of such a huge magazine!

I'm sure shes good at her job, but I think we need someone younger, and more fun, and somebody who seems to actually have style.

My choice goes to french vogue(of course) because I LOVE Rmmanuelle Alt ,she seems restrained and nice . But in US vogue I love Andre Leon , think he's cool . You forget Italian Vogue wich is perfect to me .
and yes you re right Amy Winehouse looks like Denisa Dvorakova ( I didnt notice that until you wrote me that) and I thought It was Karen Elson too in "dressed to kill" .

it scares me just to look at anna wintour, jeez. she's how i would imagine the witch in the lion the witch and the wardrobe to look.

i'm so excited about big brother too! people who arent complete addicts just don't understand but i seriously get withdrawal between big brothers. i've stopped trying to pretend that im not interested and just go ahead and watch it.

This was a neat post. People rarely talk about the stylish minds behind fashion publications.

did you watch it?
who do you like?
i like the welsh one, the peaches geldof one, the one with the spotty dress and the last one. sorry, not too good with names.

loved this post, thankyou for it. I dont know much about these people, in fact the only vogue I've ever had in my hands is a 1989 issue I found in my grandma's closet. but loved the comparisons you made.

ah man... it's good to see what these ladies actually look like. actually, the only time i ever really read vogue is if it makes it into the breakroom at work. i'm a bad trashionista.
anyway, love your blog, i'm going to post a link on my blog, would you want to do the exchange thing?

Does anyone know what Teen Vogue's Kristin Rawson actually does? I've tried looking for her name in Teen Vogue issues but her name isn't listed in anything. Just wanted to know out of curiosity.

Hmm, thats a reallt good point actually, Donna. I just went through a couple of recent issues to check and couldn't find her name anywhere in the magazin either.

I got the imformation on the Sartorialist and if you google her some results come up which is odd!

Shes like the TeenVogue ghost!

Paris Vogue is my choice. Is cooler and fresher. But I like Teen Vogue too.

I go for Vogue Paris, though I love Andre Leon so, I dunno;)
What I can say is both Vogue US and Vogue Paris have a strong identity with interesting teams, even if I don't like all the members of the teams, I think they work it out
Anna + AndreLeon, what a duet!!
Where is Vogue Italai?
I didn't know much about Vogue UK, I'm happy I've seen this
thank U :)

Dulcie, you're so right about Hadley Freeman!

but that might effect the quality of the fashion pages in the guardian magazine which I love!

...mehh...Vogue is more in need!

I must defend Alex Schulman. I think it's good that she's a bit frumpy. I like that, it means she's less intimidating and not self-obsessed. I mean, for Anna Wintour and Carine Roitfeld to look that good when they're both over 50 they must be extremely high maintenance surely? I think Alex has a more intelligent approach. There is a good mix of politics, business and art and other stuff in the mag which I wouldn't normally read but when I read them in Vogue they're very interesting. So it's not just fashion. Having said that I do like the fashion also - to me it's as good as the other Vogues. Actually, I love all the Vogues but Teen Vogue is my fave. PS - I'd never heard of that blonde 'Teen Vogue ghost' before she was on The Sartorialist either!

Phew, sorry for the monologue...

Amazingly, I was unfamiliar with Alexandra Shulman, I've only heard blips of her once or twice. I'm so surprised she's so unknown. Maybe to put her name out there, she should pull an Anna Wintour and become the bitch of all magazine publications. Or she could pull a Carine and start wearing clothes that would get any women engaged in sexual intercourse with much younger mens.

i loved this post because it like secret identities revealed, although they aren't so secret, and sadly not so super.
a.w. needs to ditch the fur. when will she realize that young people aren't really into it? just old park avenue women.

sooo right about the editors!
it's the first time I don't feel sorry I don't afford to buy Vogue USA from Romania (It's 10 times more expensive, so not worth it).
great post!

sadly i think its true, US Vogue is becoming more irrelevant now, as is British Vogue, since both seem to be taking lackluster cues from Wintour. Thats right, i blame her! Its obvious from her rigid personality and classic/predictable wardrobe shes applying a formula that just stopped working.

Teen Vogue borrows the same neuroses from its ma. i buy it obv, but doesnt it feel like ur seeing the same 'basics' re-worked every season?

btw i totally agree Bay Garnett is a doll, i wish cheap date was still running- theyd we'd be sumwer!

Good Talk!
