"Ignore capes. There, I've said it. Because truly, what's the point? They are silly. Just silly. Either you can't use your arms at all or your arms stick out of holes at an awkward angle so you look as if you are doing a Punch & Judy show. Plus, anyone who would be impressed by the fact you're wearing a cape if a bit of a prat. Yes, superheroes wear capes, but usually they wear them for flying. Can you fly? Quite. Take it off. Now."
Jess Cartner-Morley in The Guardian Weekend. I didn't want to confront the fact that when it comes to practicality capes are sort of no-go (I've worn mine out only once since I bought it and even then felt like a bit of a twat.) but, well, she said it didn't she? And there's no going back now.

But surely any item of clothing in which you can PRETEND to be a superhero is a Good Thing.
yesss. i read this and loved it. why, in the colds of british december, given the choice of sleeves or no sleeves, would designers have to pick no sleeves!
Aw, Jess sounds like s/he needs a sense of humor or a cup of coffee or a splash of Champagne or ... something!
hahahaha ummm I have to agree - love them and have one but they do sit in the cupboard collecting dust. What do you do with your hangbag? wear it underneath or dangling on the end of your arm? I secretly feel the same about super high platform shoes. London is not conducive to not being able to walk...

hahaha I love them but the armhole thing is SUCH a nuisance, the other day when I was wearing mine I pruposely didn't buy groceries (that I desperately needed) because carrying the bags would be too awkward. :(
hilarious and refreshing, I'd like to hear more where that came from.
ha! noway did she say that??
Never expected her to be so abrupt in her comment considering she is reserved for her guardian fashion vidz.. (also which i'm glad you can tell she has finally had a style overhaul and sorted out her hair and make-up for the fashion clips. just sayin')
I would deffo agree anyway!
Capes are lame, even more lame are any of those faux capes that come incognito in coats, shrugs, scarves, towels, bath mats....
xxx
Haha, everybody will hate me, but I hate a faux fur cape & I absolutely love it! I've worn it for about two weeks non stop..
xoxo.
JCM is ledge! xx
I don't mind them but I think they are for autumn rather than winter. Which is a bit of a problem really, as in the UK, it's winter about 9 months of the year. Re the bag issue, well I think people are being harsh. Just don't use a shoulder bag. There are plenty of handheld bags you can use, like a lady-bag or a shopper. Just carry it in the crook of your arm or -duh- in your hand! Or if your cape is a short one, maybe a shoulder bag with a long strap can be worn UNDER the cape so the strap is hidden but the actual bag is visible. (Haven't tried this though so pls don't flame me if it doesn't work).
