advent season: day seventeen: ink

[tattoos+2.jpg]

i've never had myself down as much of a tattoo kind of person. I was always of the view that if something was important enough you shouldn't need it tattooed to your skin as a way of proving it's significance because it was part of you anyway. And I considered how tattoos must 'date'-how could you be sure that you wouldn't feel the same way about a tattoo as a haircut from ten years ago; that you loved the style so much at the time but in hindsight dislike the aesthetic? however, of late these little thoughts have become less important and I've been thinking about tattoos. nothing serious, but they've certainly been on my brain. one of my best friends is really into them and has religious iconography planned for her arms. she's also just settled on some Hole lyrics to have inked onto her as she's just split from her long term boyfriend. here are some of the tattoos that tickle my fancy. all small and minimal as the armful of ink look isn't very me. a simple line drawing of a deer, maybe an initial behind the ear or the nape of the neck, perhaps three words across the inside of the arm.

i've been fantasising with the idea of getting something teeny tiny inked onto me when I go to america next year. something on the road to signify an important year maybe.

when it comes to tattoos, what are your views?

Ahh, tattoos! I've actually got an appointment booked for the new year. But I'm not telling anyone what it is until I actually get it.

If you have to think about it too much then you don't really want one.I have two-one I got at 17 and one last year, at 25. I got them because I could not stand to see my arm and foot without them anymore and now it is as though they were always there-I cannot imagine myself without them!Do not talk yourself into it-they either have to be there or they don't-as simple as that.

I would be disowned by my parents if I got one haha, but if I ever did it would be a skeleton key

I have "l'enfer, c'est les autres" on the inside of my arm. I got it in college when I was pissed off and studing French Existentialism, haha. I don't mind it much, it looks nice, but I hate when people ask me to explain it!

Personally, I have no interesting in committing to something for that long. I'd rather express the sentiment in jewelry that I can take off when I'm not in the mood for it.

i feel the same way. so many people our age are getting tattoos, but i don't think would appreciate any type of aesthetic for my entire life (as you said).

though, out of the pictures you posted, i would have to say, oddly, the skeleton one is my favourite! i can see why you are tempted.

I've never had a thing against tattoos, though piercings freak me out a little (that'd down to childhood trauma).
Your skin is the one thing you can never take off- if you like something enough to want it on there for life, more power to you I say. I do think, however, that it has to be about the tattoo you want to get and not about just getting a tattoo. I got some discreet ink on my left wrist four years ago, and I've never regretted it.

I really like them and if they do mean something then all the better. I think some are silly but I also think you can read a lot about a person by their ink! I would quite like one but I am yet to brave it !

Quite an impressive body art!!!

Check out something more to adorn yourself. :)

I always put this in the 'too hard' basket... like, hell yeah I'd love some ink on me, but then the pain makes me swoon, and then old hippy friends with saggy skin kinda put me off the idea... but, hell yeah!

I can appreciate tattoos on others but have never wanted one myself. Tattoo styles come and go like fashion trends, and I don't want to be stuck with something I've grown sick of. I have taken out all my piercings from high school; if I can't commit to those, I cant commit to ink.

oh yeah! I need a new one.

I love the idea of getting a tattoo and have thought about it several times but I'm far too indecisive and prone to changing my mind to commit to something so permanent!

I really don't like tattoos especially on women. I think they make a person look dirty and trashy and worse once the skin starts to sag and age. I think they are a super terrible idea. yuck yuck

no no no no no! these tats are beautiful and very cool right now but trust me as someone on the wrong side of 35, they will definatly not be in fashion one day. i've seen tats mark people as belonging to a certain era, when that era passes and a new one comes alone you may want to be more fluid and adaptable - not be so easily identified. i think its much more chic to be able to evole and be timeless. however if you can't resist, i'm sure in 20 yrs time there will be some amazing removal tecniques for the cues of aging women wanting to re-invent themselves xx

I have 4 tattoos, one quite large one on my upper arm. It is beautiful and I often get comments about how pretty it is, even from old ladies and folks you'd never think would like tattoos. But...they're not for everyone. I advise finding what you want, printing it out and placing it somewhere you have to look at everyday, b/c that's what it's like having a tattoo, unless of course, you get it on your back somewhere unnnoticeable, then trust me, you'll barely even remember it's there. I advise against meaningful but ugly tattoos (words, phrases, etc.) b/c people will constantly want to know what they 'stand for' or the 'significance.' I view my tats as permanent jewelry, they are a part of me just like my hair and eyeballs.

And I might add that laser removal is quick and easy now! I had a very small tat from my teen years that I hated and got lasered off in 2 sessions.

I'm not sure how I would personally feel about a tattoo on my own body, but I certainly admire them as a form of art. I especially love Freja Beha's numerous small tattoos... in a strange way, i find them chic.

I have a small tattoo, I would never have had one anywhere visible, but I still really love it 15 years on.

It says something to me about who I was when I had to done and will always be there to remind me where I came from

I have 2 oldschool swallows since 2003. I like the old/sailor stuff, that's why I really like the anchor on the first picture.

I'm thinking about getting a little tiny anchor on my foot.

Great pictures // Lovely blog!

i have two, one i got recently,i've had it for about a month now and one i got 9 days after i turned 18
i think,if you're getting one, you should be DYING to get it...for my second tattoo i was literally itching to get it done...it should be a feeling like that
and i think it's good for you to seriously put thought into it..there's no overthinking it if it's going to be permanent
i like the tattoos you've chosen for this post as well!!

oh and one tattoo may lead to another.and then another. and then maybe another hahahaha.
i thought i was only going to get one, just got a second, and am still thinking of more

I really really want a tatto too. But the problem is, I keep changing my mind on what I want. But definitely nothing huge or super visible. Just a little one, in an area not as common for tattoos like the rib cage.

Although, I will never get a tattoo, the small, subtle ones always strike my fancy. I love how they're hidden and have their own symbolic story.

I've always kind of played around with the idea of a very, very small one on my hand somewhere.

in general, i like tattoos. well, i like them when they seem to match the person who has them, if that makes any sense at all.

i would get one, but i can't think of anything significant enough to permanently etch onto my body, you know?

if you want one, go for it! just make sure it's something you wouldn't mind having for the rest of your life. ;]

GOOD CHOICE OF TATTOS

i love my tattoos! a small one on my wrist, and one on the ring finger of my right hand.

here's my philosophy: if you ever hate it, by the time you do, it will be so much a part of you that it won't even really matter.

don't sweat the small stuff...ink yourself something pretty.

I have 'Such is Life' tattooed on my stomach. They are allegedly last words of Australian folk hero Ned Kelly.
